    Profiling consumers' decision-making styles: The case of environmental conscious consumers in Basaksehir, Istanbul

    Every person has differences from others through personality, lifestyle, economic wealth, and their interest. Hence these differences affect their decisions. This research provides a clear look for antecedent studies on consumer decision-making styles (DMS), connects the findings of those studies with today's consumers, and determine a new dimension of the consumers' DMS that affected by new consumer trends, which is thriving by environmental awareness of consumers. Where, less plastic usage and more green products are consumed by environmentally friendly consumers. The research starts with a brief summary of consumers' DMS dimensions, explains the need for the new dimension, clarifies consumers DMS of people that live in Başakşehir, Istanbul, and make suggestions for firm managers, marketers and the future researches. Lastly, results show that six out of eight factors suggested by Sproles and Kendall, [1986], are validated by the research. Whereas, two of the factors are not confirmed, and a new dimension has determined, which is named as “environmentally conscious consumer".

    Country selection for energy company’s new branch using fuzzy topsis

    Solar energy is regarded as one of the most important and promising technologies in the field of renewable energies. Turkey has been one of the first countries to adopt solar energy and harness it in the last two decades. Many Turkish companies especially holdings started to invest in North Africa, either by expanding their operations there or through opening new branches and making alliances with the other countries concerned. This paper aims to identify the best North African country for a specific Turkish company to open a solar energy branch. The process involved Fuzzy Topsis multi-criteria decision making where criteria for selection of one of the countries has been collected from experts, and three decision makers have been chosen to rate the criteria in terms of each alternative countries. Fuzzy topsis analysis was chosen because of the level of the uncertainty in this case study. Regardless of the data available concerning each criterion for all the alternative countries, there is still a certain level of ambiguity to overcome. The results of this study suggested that Algeria would be the best choice for this Turkish company to open up a new branch. The second best fitting country would be Egypt followed by Libya. While Morocco and Tunisia had the lowest ranking.

    A Scoping review of artificial intelligence applications in airports

    This paper aims to synthesize the literature on the application of artificial intelligence for airports. The selected methodology was based on the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), a recognized framework for systematic reviews. Authors searched the Scopus and Web of Science databases for articles that met the following criteria: (1) publication in peer-reviewed journals, (2) English language, and (3) relevance to airport operations, demonstrated by either (a) the use of airport datasets for showcasing AI applications or (b) the use of airports as case studies. Articles were assessed by two reviewers, and data were extracted on the articles’ keywords, publication year, and origin country. After screening and checking for eligibility, 121 unique articles were examined. Upon assessment, the included articles were categorized into seven main themes. Each category and its specific subtopics were individually discussed within this paper. Results indicate that the most extensively studied category belongs to airport administration and management. Security and air traffic control (ATC) were the second and third most studied categories, respectively. Notably, a significant portion of the articles focused on optimization techniques, scheduling strategies, and developing decision support systems (DSS) tailored to various airport departments. This paper not only highlights current research trends in the field of AI for airports but also identifies gaps in the existing literature. The paper proposes future research directions to enhance the effective implementation of AI technologies within airport environments.

    Assessment of sustainable aviation fuel production methods using a hybridized decision-making framework

    Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) present a feasible solution to decarbonize modern aviation. Unlike traditional jet fuels, SAFs are produced in a variety of ways, thereby choosing one of these processes is a complicated Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) challenge that involves conflicting priorities. This study evaluates SAF production processes using a multicriteria methodology, PROMETHEE II. With SAF technology in its nascent stage and limited data, several stakeholders in the aviation sector were enlisted to assist in the collection of data and preferences. The suggested framework’s strength lies in its adaptability to suit the subjective opinions of diverse stakeholders, selection of a ranking system, and robustness of outcomes. This research engaged stakeholders in a participatory manner to rank 11 (A1 to A11) SAF production paths based on 24 parameters categorized into social, environmental, economic, and technological evaluation criteria. Industry professionals were given a form to rate SAF production methods according to a performance criterion. Data is validated using fuzzy TOPSIS, fuzzy VIKOR, and PROMETHEE II to reduce professionals’ judgmental personal prejudice. Results indicate the optimal feedstock for SAF production is the direct transition process of CO2 to SAF (A11) in the gasification or Fischer-T synthesis group.

    Lean service operations and a lean management application at a foundation university

    Lean service operations and lean management are of vital importance for all service providers as much as manufacturers. Unfortunately, most universities need to be made aware of the concept of lean. However, they can benefit from lean management in all their service areas, such as admissions, administration of research funds, hiring, and nearly any functional area where multi-step processes can be simplified and focused on the needs of the users served by the organization. Lean methodologies focus on reducing waste (Muda in Japanese), remov-ing overburden (Muri in Japanese), and unnecessary variation (Mura in Japanese). Non-value-added activities are eliminated or dealt with to develop the performance of the process. This study aims to highlight the suitability of lean in a university environment to enhance the effi-ciency of the operational tasks performed and provide suggestions for better performance. Lean methodologies were applied to the School of Graduate Studies at a Turkish university to study the current state of the process and provide recommendations and alternatives for the current issues faced using Value Stream Mapping (VSM). As a result, Value-Added and Non-Value-Added activities were identified with Indicative Ratios to compare the performance before and after applying lean. In the end, seven questions were answered to develop a proposal for the future state of the process, which was presented to the university management

    Performance measurement of composite textile industries in Pakistan using data envelopment analysis

    This study aims at evaluating and measuring the relative technical efficiency of Pakistan’s textile industry vertically integrated composite firms using Data Envelopment Analysis under the assumption of variable returns to scale (VRS). The data used for this study is collected from the firm’s official website and the Karachi Stock Exchange. This output oriented study covers 29 firms for the period of 2014-2016 employing three homogeneous inputs and outputs. Current asset, production cost and administration cost of the firms are used as inputs elements, gross profit, and total sales and net income compromised the output constituent. In addition to evaluating technical efficiency, this paper examines variations among efficient and inefficient firms. Our findings indicate that, only 17% percent of the firms are scale efficient while 35% of the firms are technically efficient with a mean value of 0.731. Our analysis also indicates an average of 0.572 technical efficiency from constant returns to scale DEA, an average of 0.731 of technical efficiency from variable returns to scale DEA, and an average of 0.805 Scale efficiency. Accordingly, this study confirmed the existence of scale and technical efficiency difference between the firms of the same industry. Though the determinant and factors of efficiency difference among firms is not examined in this study, we recommend that inefficient firms need to enhance their scale size and perk up their managerial practices to enhance their overall efficiency.

    A digital transformation maturity model for the airline industry with a self-assessment tool

    The technological habitat in which successful firms may flourish is in rapid change. With digital transformation (DT), everything is connected and interdependent. Manual processes are now automated for most businesses. As a result, habits, and needs are changing, which, in turn, affects the conventional way firms offer their goods and services. Airlines are eager to participate in the trend as well. Those who adapt quickly to this new world will gain a greater share of the pie. However, most airlines have bulky and rigid systems designed based on the industry’s strict rules and regulations. Thus, the transformation process required to adapt to the new era of digitalization is not a simple task. Several interrelated factors, such as strategy, organization, customer, technology, operations, ecosystem, and innovation, have to be redefined to conceptualize a valid and functioning business framework. On the other hand, connectivity and accessibility are the game’s name from the passengers’ perspective. Acknowledging the necessities of the new era, the aim of this study is two-fold: (i) to highlight the essence of DT by examining the role of DT’s sub-dimensions in the civil airline industry, (ii) and propose a Digital Transformation Maturity (DTM) self-assessment tool for determining the DT maturity level of airline firms. The former is assessed by the judgments of aviation experts using Interval Type-2 Fuzzy AHP (IT2F-AHP), while the second stage was done with a survey in an airline company. According to the results, the digital strategy and the technology are highlighted as the most prominent dimensions of the proposed DTM tool. DTM evaluation of the selected airline reveals that the company is on the right path, with an overall score of 62 in its DT journey. However, some clear improvement opportunities are visible.

    A hybridized Pythagorean fuzzy AHP and WASPAS method for airline new route selection: Case study of Turkish Airline

    Purpose – This study aims to provide a practical and novel solution for the complex multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem of airline route selection, which is characterized by conflicting criteria, alternative routes, and complex judgments. Design/methodology/approach – This study proposes a hybrid MCDM approach using Interval-valued Pythagorean Fuzzy AHP and Interval-valued Pythagorean Fuzzy weighted aggregated sum product assessment (WASPAS) methods. Decision analysis is applied to select a new route between different alternatives through selection criteria. Pythagorean Fuzzy AHP is used for weighting criteria, and Pythagorean Fuzzy WASPAS is used for assessing alternatives. The pair-wise linguistic comparisons of selection criteria are transferred into Pythagorean fuzzy numbers (PFNs) to weigh each criterion’s importance. Findings – The pair-wise linguistic comparisons of selection criteria are transferred into PFNs to weigh each criterion’s importance. The results of these comparisons show that the main criteria, cost (43% weight) and demand (33% weight), impact route selection decisions more than social/economic conditions (15% weight) and competitiveness (9% weight). Regarding the criteria, the five routes alternative were evaluated by the route development experts, and the best route was selected with Pythagorean Fuzzy WASPAS. Practical implications – The proposed model is used for a route selection problem of Turkish Airlines, the airline that flies to the most countries in the world. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to use the Interval-valued Pythagorean Fuzzy AHP combined with Interval-valued Pythagorean Fuzzy WASPAS to solve the route selection problem. This hybrid MCDM methodology presents a novel and feasible solution for selecting the new route for airlines.
