Yayın Unlocking the relationships between strategic planning, leadership and technology transfer competence: The mediating role of strategic quality management(Emerald Publishing, 2022) Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Sönmeztürk Bolatan, Gülin İdil; Gölgeci, İsmail; Arslan, Ahmad; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Gözlü, Sıtkı; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüPurpose This study aims to investigate the relationships between firms' strategic planning (SP), leadership and technology transfer competence (TTC) by specifically incorporating the mediating role of strategic quality management (SQM). Design/methodology/approach This study performs structural equation modeling using AMOS on survey data collected from 200 Turkish firms operating in multiple industries and sectors. Findings This study finds that leadership in Turkish firms operating in multiple sectors is positively associated with SQM. This study further finds that SQM positively influences Turkish firms' TTC and mediates the roles of SP and leadership in TTC. Research limitations/implications A key research implication from this study relates to the mediating role of SQM in TTC in an emerging economy context. This study highlights that SP and leadership can play an essential role in TTC through the mediating mechanism of SQM. Consequently, SQM emerges as a crucial linking pin in conveying the impact of quality management practices on technology transfer in emerging markets. Practical implications An essential managerial implication of this study relates to the critical roles of leadership, SP and SQM in TTC. For the managers of firms operating in a relatively uncertain emerging context such as Turkey, it is essential to adopt a supportive and empowering leadership style, where open communication and innovative activities are viewed positively and SQM is adopted holistically. Also, SP should be streamlined throughout the firm and followed by SQM to support TTC. Originality/value This paper links the technology (and knowledge) management and the strategy and leadership literature streams by focusing on the mechanisms of technology transfer and delving into the linkages between SQM, leadership, SP and TTC. It specifically presents SP and leadership as precursors to SQM in their joint influence on TTC. Accordingly, this research bridges technology, strategy and leadership research and provides a broader picture of technology transfer that encompasses the joint role of different processes in firms' TTC.Yayın How does external knowledge sourcing affect business performance in large-scale firms? The mediating role of open technology strategies(IEEE, 2021) Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Avunduk, Zehra Binnur; Kazan, Halim; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis article examines the mediating impact of open technology strategies (OTS) on the link between three types of external knowledge sources (i.e., scientific, institutional, and indirect partners) and business performance (BP). Structural equation modeling is conducted in order to test the research model based on a survey of 241 companies drawn from the database of Turkey’s largest 500 manufacturing companies. The study’s findings indicate that the implementation of OTS mediates the relationships between external knowledge sourcing (EKS) from scientific partners and indirect partners with BP. However, no support is found for the mediation effect of OTS on the link between EKS from institutional partners and BP. This article extends the innovation literature by empirically investigating open innovation in large-scale companies in emerging country settings.Yayın Crafting performance-based cryptocurrency mining strategies using a hybrid analytics approach(Elsevier, 2021) Chlyeh, Dounia; Hacıoğlu, Ümit; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Yılmaz, Mustafa Kemal; Delen, Dursun; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüCrafting and executing the best cryptocurrency mining strategy is vital to succeeding in cryptocurrency market investments. This study aims to identify the best cryptocurrency mining strategy based on service providers’ performance for cryptocurrency mining using a hybrid analytics approach, which integrates the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy-TOPSIS techniques, along with sensitivity analysis. The results show that hosted mining is the overall best cryptocurrency mining strategy, followed by home mining and cloud mining, based on both total cost of operations and cryptocurrency payout criteria. The empirical findings also suggest that the critical features of the highest performing service providers (i.e., hosted mining strategies and cloud mining) were their flexibility of contracts and the superior efficiency in terms of the daily payout. Finally, of the three location alternatives for home mining, Turkey ranks first compared to the U.S. and Europe.Yayın Absorptive capacity and organizational performance in an emerging market context: Evidence from the banking industry in Turkey(Elsevier, 2022) Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Bouguerra, Abderaouf; Mellahi, Kamel; Glaister, Keith; Sadeghi, Arash; Temouri, Yama; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüAdopting the knowledge-based view (KBV), this study investigates how and when firms in emerging economies are able to generate greater performance from the absorptive capacity (AC). We distinguish between two core components of AC - potential absorptive capacity (PAC) and realized absorptive capacity (RAC) - and examine their independent as well as the joint effect on organizational performance. Then, we examine the moderating effects of environmental dynamism and branch network- as key boundary conditions. With data from 205 bank managers in Turkey, we show that the complementary effect of PAC and RAC on organizational performance is greater than the separate effect of each component. Moreover, the findings indicate that the combined effect becomes stronger when firms are part of an extensive branch network and function in a low level of environmental dynamism. We extend the KBV by demonstrating that innovation and knowledge resource development in emerging markets requires a collective effort and complementary learning processes to yield high results. Finally, we scrutinize the conditions under which firms in emerging markets can complement their learning processes efficiently to achieve greater performance.Yayın Chasing productivity demands, worker well-being, and firm performance : The moderating effects of HR support and flexible work arrangements(Emerald, 2020) Ab Wahab, Mastura; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüPurpose – This study aims to examine the impact of chasing productivity demands on worker well-being and firm performance in manufacturing firms in Malaysia. Flexible work arrangements and human resources support are used as moderators to mitigate the adverse impacts associated with chasing productivity demands. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from 213 workers from manufacturing firms through a survey questionnaire utilizing structural equation modeling. Findings – The findings of the study show that flexible work arrangements play a significant role in moderating the relationship between chasing productivity demands and well-being, and between chasing productivity demands and firm performance. The study also shows that flexible work arrangements are important to buffer the adverse effects of chasing productivity demands on worker well-being. In addition, flexible work arrangements strengthen the positive effect of worker well-being on firm performance. Research limitations/implications – This study highlights the importance of flexible work arrangements in overcoming the negative impact of the relationship between chasing productivity demands and worker wellbeing and strengthening the positive impact of the relationship between worker well-being and firm performance. Originality/value – This study has extended the variable of chasing productivity demands in the existing literature on the job demands–job control model, specifically in manufacturing firms.Yayın A review of spiritual tourism: A conceptual model for future research(University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Opatija, 2021) Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Abdul Halim, Mutia Sobihah; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Mohamad Hanefar, Shamsiah Banu; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüPurpose – The growth of non-materialistic impulses among people around the world has led to the emergence of a special category of tourism that can be termed ‘spiritual tourism’. This article presents an attempt to provide a conceptual model for spiritual tourism drawing from the literature on spirituality, religion, and tourism. Design/ Approach – As this study intends to build a bridge between spirituality and tourism, the authors reviewed various articles and adopted the Spiritual Intelligence Model devised by Hanefar, Sa’ari, and Siraj (2016) to build a conceptual model of spiritual tourism. Methodology – Content analysis was used to arrange more than forty dimensions of spiritual tourism from the chosen articles. These dimensions were coded and mapped against the Spiritual Intelligence Model. Findings – The emergent dimensions of spiritual tourism showed that tourism offers unique opportunities in guiding human being to gain spiritual development through religion and nonreligion tourism activities/experiences. Originality of the research – The authors developed a Conceptual Model of Spiritual Tourism with seven themes: Meaning/Purpose of life, Consciousness, Transcendence, Spiritual resources, Selfdetermination, Reflection – soul purification, and Spiritual coping (with obstacles). This model intends to serve as a systematic pathway to authors and other researchers for future research related to spiritual tourism.Yayın MNEs engagement with environmental sustainability in an emerging economy: Do dynamic capabilities and entrepreneurial orientation matter?(Elsevier, 2024) Bouguerra, Abderaouf; Çakır, M. Selim; Rajwani, Tazeeb; Mellahi, Kamel; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüIn this study, we investigate the link between multinational enterprises’ (MNEs) dynamic capabilities (DC) and their environmental collaboration with suppliers mediated by entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and moderated by environmental complexity. Drawing on responses from 249 managers of MNEs in Türkiye, we find that DC improve environmental collaboration with suppliers. Moreover, we posit that through EO, MNEs achieves greater environmental collaboration with suppliers for effective environmental solutions, especially at a low level of environmental complexity. The results enrich the role of organizational capabilities in strengthening environmental collaboration with suppliers to achieve environmental sustainability, and provide suggestions for managers and policymakers to better understand capabilities for the purpose of attaining sustainability.Yayın Revisiting the concept of absorptive capacity: The moderating effects of market sensing and responsiveness(Wiley, 2020) Bouguerra, Abderaouf; Mellahi, Kamel; Glaister, Keith; Hughes, Mathew; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis study proposes new moderators acting on well-established antecedents of absorptive capacity. We treat separately the two dimensions of potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity. We ?rst examine the moderating effect of market sensing on the relationship between coordination capability and potential absorptive capacity. Then, we assess the moderating effect of market responsiveness on the links between organizational systems and socialization processes and realized absorptive capacity. We draw on multilevel analysis with data from 205 managers from the banking sector in Turkey to test our hypothesized relationships. Our contribution reveals interesting insights on the contingent effects of market sensing and responsiveness for the emergence of absorptive capacity. Market sensing moderates the relationship between coordination capability and potential absorptive capacity, while market responsiveness moderates the relationships between organizational systems and socialization processes and realized absorptive capacity. The ?ndings provide important implications for theory and practice on developing potential and realized absorptive capacity.Yayın Big data analytics capabilities and firm performance: An integrated MCDM approach(Elsevier, 2020) Yasmin, Mariam; Kılıç, Hüseyin Selçuk; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Delen, Dursun; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis study explores the interdependence of big data analytics (BDA) capabilities and the impact of these capabilities on firm performance using an integrated multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methodology. Drawing on a rich data set obtained from selected case study firms in Pakistan, three MCDM tools, namely, intuitionistic fuzzy decision-making trial and evolution laboratory (IF-DEMATEL), analytic network process (ANP), and simple additive weighting (SAW), are employed to assess the relative importance of BDA capabilities and the relationship of these capabilities with the firm performance. The results show that BDA capabilities are interdependent, and infrastructure capabilities are the highest-ranked among all, followed by management and human resource capabilities, respectively. The SAW results indicate an association between BDA capabilities and firm performance. Moreover, BDA capabilities are more strongly related to operational performance than to market performance.Yayın Toward a holistic understanding of sustainability in corporations: Resource-based view of sustainable supply chain management(Emerald Publishing, 2021) Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Ayaz Arda, Özlem; Montabon, Frank; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Gölgeci, İsmail; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüPurpose While the three interconnected aspects of the triple bottom line -environmental, social and economic sustainability- are well-established, these aspects have insufficiently been addressed together in the supply chain management literature. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to examine whether environmental and social performance mediates the relationship between environmental management practices and operational performance and whether operational performance mediates the relationship between environmental and social performance and financial performance. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on a data set of 208 firms operating in a wide range of manufacturing industries, the authors test the hypotheses using structural equation modeling. The research context for the study is Turkey, an important emerging market and one of the nexuses of European and Asian supply chains. Findings The findings indicate that all three aspects of sustainability have mutually supportive relationships as demonstrated by positive mediating mechanisms between environmental management practices and operational performance and between environmental and social performance and financial performance. The mediation results correspond with the resource-based view. They indicate that building up capabilities and resources in the form of environmental management practices supports three areas of the triple bottom line and boosts firms' financial performance. Originality/value Research on sustainability is well-established, yet supply chain management research has, thus, far paid insufficient attention to all three aspects. This paper, thus, sets itself apart by explicitly considering all three aspects of sustainability and contributes to understanding how they relate to one another.
