Yayın The evaluation of operational efficiencies of Turkish airports: An integrated spherical fuzzy AHP/DEA approach(Elsevier, 2022) Hacıoğlu, Ümit; Yılmaz, Mustafa Kemal; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Hacıoğlu, Ümit; Yılmaz, Mustafa Kemal; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Yılmaz, Mustafa Kemal; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Aksoy, Mine; Hacıoğlu, Ümit; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThe demand for air transport services has significantly increased around the globe, which has brought new investments in airports, which, in turn, requires in-depth efficiency analysis of these capital-intensive endeavors. This study examines the operational efficiencies of 46 Turkish civil airports from 2015 to 2018. We employ a novel hybrid methodology that combines Spherical Fuzzy Sets based Analytic Hierarchy Process (SFS-AHP) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which provides a solid basis for efficiency analysis. To this end, it can handle the hesitancy and uncertainty that the subjective evaluation process of input and output factors possess. Then, we use Self Organizing Maps (SOM), a machine learning method for clustering, to examine the effect of outlier airports on the efficiency scores. Finally, a posthoc analysis is conducted with Tobit regression model to assess the explanatory power of external factors on the efficiency scores, i.e., tourism potential, number of international flights, distance to the city center, population, public/private ownership, and age of airport. The findings show that 67.2% of the Turkish airports operate below the optimal efficiency level, and 93.5% of them should make considerable efforts to refine their operations by implementing managerial and structural changes to reduce input factors. The results also suggest that the airports located in high-density touristic areas achieve higher efficiency levels. Those relatively closer to the city center lead to more airport traffic, generating more revenues. Thus, both factors have a significant impact on efficiency scores. The study provides a novel efficiency analysis framework for airport operators and policy makers that helps them make informed decisions.Yayın Managing public transport during COVID-19: An analysis of the impact and preventive response in Istanbul(Millî Savunma Üniversitesi, 2021) Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Deveci, Muhammet; Aydın, Nezir; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThe number of passengers in public transport has decreased significantly in major cities around the world due to COVID-19. As residents of many countries work from home, they have avoided public transport to minimize their exposure to the outbreak and have changed their way of traveling within their cities due to major changes in local public transport services. Istanbul is one of the cities most affected by the pandemic in terms of the daily number of passengers using public transportation. For the first time since the pandemic started in Istanbul, the use of urban public transportation has decreased by more than 90 percent. The aim of this study is to examine the measures taken in Istanbul public transport in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, the trends in public transport and inter-modes demands during COVID-19 are analyzed. The results showed that COVID-19 measures to protect the health of passengers in Istanbul public transport are in line with global practices during the initial stage of the pandemic.Yayın Optimization of reverse logistics network of End of Life Vehicles under fuzzy supply: A case study for Istanbul Metropolitan Area(Elsevier, 2019) Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Ayvaz, Berk; Cin, Emine; Aydın, Nezir; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüRecycling aims at preventing rapid depletion of natural resources while transforming produced waste into value for economy. However, this process becomes a major challenge in automotive industry, which requires cooperative engagement of multiple players within a complex supply chain. In line with the essence of the topic, government agencies around the world issue directives drawing regulatory frameworks for designing recycling operations comprising various activities such as collection of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs), recovery of reusable components, shredding ELV's body, recycling valuable materials and disposal of the hazardous waste. In general, the amount of returned product in a reverse logistics network is highly uncertain, and the ELV market in Turkey is no exception to this. For that purpose, this study aims developing a fuzzy mixed integer location-allocation model for reverse logistic network of ELVs conforming to the existing directives in Turkey. Accordingly, this study uses a novel approach and assumes that ELV supply in the network is uncertain. The merit of the proposed mathematical model is proved on a real world scenario addressing the reverse logistics design problem for ELVs generated in metropolitan area of Istanbul. The network generated specifies that recycling process is not profitable under the existing circumstances with the given level of supplied ELV and the returned product records per capita in Istanbul are far beyond the EU averages. Consequently, sensitivity analyses question the reliability of the obtained results.Yayın The impacts of COVID-19 on travel behavior and initial perception of public transport measures in Istanbul(Elsevier, 2022) Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Aydın, Nezir; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Deveci, Muhammet; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThe epidemic disease emerged in Wuhan/China in December 2019, which primarily causes acute respiratory syndrome and spread worldwide in a very short time. Although the countries took numerous precautions, the spread of the virus could not be controlled. Furthermore, due to the inability to maintain physical distance and the excess of shared surfaces, public transport services also increase the risk of spreading. This study analyzes the changes in perceptions and behavior of passengers who use public transportation via a survey. The survey is developed to assess the behavioral change of passengers pre and post-pandemic of COVID-19. Outcomes showed a notable shift among transportation modes due to closure of venues, utilization of distance education, partial curfews in Istanbul. A further focal point of the study is the passengers’ attitudes towards preventive measures and their perceptions on how well responsible bodies have implemented the measures. Thus, it provides valuable insights into the changes in the traveling habits of city residents, which help the policymakers of public transportation.Yayın Designing reverse logistics network for end-of-life vehicles: A sustainability perspective in a fragile supply chain(The International Journal of Industrial Engineering, 2021) Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Ayvaz, Berk; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Aydın, Nezir; Ertaş, Emine; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüEnvironmental guidelines in the automotive industry greatly emphasize the recycling, remanufacturing, and recovering of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs). Given the principle of extended producer responsibility, developing an effective reverse logistics network is the most significant digit ahead of the industry. However, initial attempts addressing the reverse logistics network design (RLND) problem were short-sighted, focusing on cost minimization. Undoubtedly, the whole concept of recycling was founded on the pillars of sustainability. Accordingly, reverse logistics network design must be motivated by long-term environmental and societal benefits. This fact has become even more prominent in the current pandemic environment as COVID-19 has added serious uncertainties and risks to the supply chain processes. This paper reiterates the essence of sustainability goals and proposes a multi-objective fuzzy mathematical model to RLND problem for ELVs under such a fragile and fuzzy environment. The coverage of the proposed model is to optimally determine the locations and numbers of the facilities and the flows among them concerning environmental, social, and economic aspects. Hence, the model aims to reach a robust compromise solution that leads to a resilient network design. A real case study on the ELV market in Istanbul/Turkey proves the merit of the developed model.Yayın Performance measurement of composite textile industries in Pakistan using data envelopment analysis(2018) Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Jasmin, Mariam; Bushera, İbrahim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis study aims at evaluating and measuring the relative technical efficiency of Pakistan’s textile industry vertically integrated composite firms using Data Envelopment Analysis under the assumption of variable returns to scale (VRS). The data used for this study is collected from the firm’s official website and the Karachi Stock Exchange. This output oriented study covers 29 firms for the period of 2014-2016 employing three homogeneous inputs and outputs. Current asset, production cost and administration cost of the firms are used as inputs elements, gross profit, and total sales and net income compromised the output constituent. In addition to evaluating technical efficiency, this paper examines variations among efficient and inefficient firms. Our findings indicate that, only 17% percent of the firms are scale efficient while 35% of the firms are technically efficient with a mean value of 0.731. Our analysis also indicates an average of 0.572 technical efficiency from constant returns to scale DEA, an average of 0.731 of technical efficiency from variable returns to scale DEA, and an average of 0.805 Scale efficiency. Accordingly, this study confirmed the existence of scale and technical efficiency difference between the firms of the same industry. Though the determinant and factors of efficiency difference among firms is not examined in this study, we recommend that inefficient firms need to enhance their scale size and perk up their managerial practices to enhance their overall efficiency.Yayın The effects of frequent flyer programs in the airline industry on customer loyalty(Research and Development Academy, 2021) Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Şahin, Hande; Mbowe, Baboucarr; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüCustomer Loyalty Programs are one of the handiest tools to raise brand awareness, and secure long-term and strong ties between a brand and existing consumers. Airline companies have been using frequent flyer programs (FFPs) to retain customers with the expectation of increasing passengers’ loyalty levels. The purpose of this study was to examine the significance of FFPs for customer loyalty, which is of great help for customer retention in the civil aviation industry in the sample of passengers flying from the new Istanbul Airport. Furthermore, we questionedthe effectiveness of various services and products offered within FFPs for loyalty, which is decomposed into two main components, behavioral, and attitudinal commitment of loyalty. We evaluatedthe significance of various demographic factors on passengers’ perception of FFPs services and privileges, and customer loyalty. The study confirmedthe vital role of FFPs to build up brand loyalty, where profession, duration of the membership to FFPs, and gender are essential factors.Yayın A hybridized Pythagorean fuzzy AHP and WASPAS method for airline new route selection: Case study of Turkish Airline(Emerald Publishing, 2025) Koma, Şenay; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Haji Amiri, Misagh; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüPurpose – This study aims to provide a practical and novel solution for the complex multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem of airline route selection, which is characterized by conflicting criteria, alternative routes, and complex judgments. Design/methodology/approach – This study proposes a hybrid MCDM approach using Interval-valued Pythagorean Fuzzy AHP and Interval-valued Pythagorean Fuzzy weighted aggregated sum product assessment (WASPAS) methods. Decision analysis is applied to select a new route between different alternatives through selection criteria. Pythagorean Fuzzy AHP is used for weighting criteria, and Pythagorean Fuzzy WASPAS is used for assessing alternatives. The pair-wise linguistic comparisons of selection criteria are transferred into Pythagorean fuzzy numbers (PFNs) to weigh each criterion’s importance. Findings – The pair-wise linguistic comparisons of selection criteria are transferred into PFNs to weigh each criterion’s importance. The results of these comparisons show that the main criteria, cost (43% weight) and demand (33% weight), impact route selection decisions more than social/economic conditions (15% weight) and competitiveness (9% weight). Regarding the criteria, the five routes alternative were evaluated by the route development experts, and the best route was selected with Pythagorean Fuzzy WASPAS. Practical implications – The proposed model is used for a route selection problem of Turkish Airlines, the airline that flies to the most countries in the world. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to use the Interval-valued Pythagorean Fuzzy AHP combined with Interval-valued Pythagorean Fuzzy WASPAS to solve the route selection problem. This hybrid MCDM methodology presents a novel and feasible solution for selecting the new route for airlines.Yayın Ekonomik büyüme, tabiat ve değer dünyamız(İbn Haldun Üniversitesi, 2018) Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüBüyümeli ama nasıl büyümeli sorusu tefekkür dünyamızı daha çok meşgul ediyor artık.
