Nationalism and knowledge: Othering and the disciplin(e)ing of anthropology in India
(Routledge, 2023) Ahmad, Irfan; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Sosyoloji Bölümü
This essay is about how Indian anthropology-sociology has historically theorized Islam and Muslims. In it, I demonstrate how anthropologists’ discourse on Islam and the majoritarian Hindu discourse on nation–Muslims being its constitutive other–dovetail into each other. Three main catalogues through which anthropology has dealt with Muslims are: silence, alienness and erasure. Against anthropology’s self-perception as the most reflexive discipline, I argue how Indian anthropology has been intertwined with nation-state as both an ideology and a set of practices. I also identify connections between symbolic violence of anthropology-sociology manifest in the othering of Islam and anti-Muslim political violence in postcolonial India. Discussing influential texts, schools of thoughts, departments, individuals, institutions, professional association in a framework that comparatively alludes to the ‘anomaly’ of Jews vis-à-vis German anthropology, this essay also charts out a different genealogy of anthropology in India, one that remains hushed in the regnant accounts. In so doing, it maps the discipline’s trajectory from its moment of formation to the present. One key aim of the essay is to unveil the theory behind methodological nationalism to discuss the (im)possibility of writing an alternative anthropology-sociology of India.
Imagining Egypt in postnormal times: The state of war
(Routledge, 2022) Ezzat, Heba; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Sosyoloji Bölümü
Accounting for the whole matrix of complex relationships between society and the state in Egypt after the Arab Spring in one go is not easy, nor is offering an analysis of the complexity of civil-military relations in Egyptian history and politics a small task. This chapter will only attempt to highlight in broad brushstrokes the changing nature of the concept of the political in Egypt today in relation to spatiality and to reveal the need for a new paradigm in Middle East studies, as well as an overdue reformation of Egyptian political thought…

Rumi connections: A diasporic group in distinct geographies in Asia
(New Bulgarian University, 2018) Özay, Mehmet; Özay, Mehmet; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Sosyoloji Bölümü
Asian nations have experienced significant migration periods over the course of history commencing from the early ages of their respective histories. The major human stocks initiating their migrations on the basis of various reasons exercised the mobility and caused cultural, political and religious interactions and changes in distinct geographies. Regarding this, a particular group, the Rumis, who are identified as the seafarers and warriors in the Ottoman State, had an impact in the regions as a diasporic group exercising their professions from the West Asia through India and till Southeast Asia. This paper will briefly discuss the migrant issue of the Rumis which seems to have emerged in the early decades of the 16th century in the Asia Minor, and their travel for various reasons to the Indian Subcontinent and the Archipelago in Southeast Asia. The historical existence of the Rumis in these regions can be traced till the beginning of the 18th century. The mobilization of the Rumis is considered to have been initially based on the expansion process of the Ottoman State. Beyond this, it can be argued that the awareness of the relevant geographies, expansion of trade routes and the requirement of the skilled warriors by the sultanates adjacent to the Indian Ocean are the reasons for the smaller or larger group of the Rumis to have traveled by their own capacities under certain conditions. The Rumis who can be regarded as individual entrepreneurs have contributed to the acquaintance of the Ottomans with the relevant sultanates and their existence reveals connections, to some or larger extent, in the above-mentioned geographies.
